This weekend in Taitung there will be a music festival featuring many local performers at Tie Hua Music Village. The concert is a fundraiser to support the construction of a new hospital on the south side of Taitung.

''The hospital that will be built on the highway south from Taitung will be the only one in that part of Taiwan,” said Dr. Hsu, the man behind the plan. “It will not only benefit people's health but also keep tourists safe.''

Many different tribes live along the Number 9 Highway between Taitung and Pingtung, but as of now there is no hospital there. When people get really sick, they need to drive about one and half hours or even longer to get to a hospital downtown.

Since 2015, there has been a group of musicians who started a public welfare action. The purpose of the of this festival is to build a hospital on the Number 9.

This year, there are two concerts, one in Taitung and the other in Taipei, and there will be many local aboriginal singers, mostly from Taitung, performing at the festival.

On Saturday night, a singer called Summer and the band Mafana will perform. Mafana is an Amis band which has been around for ten years. The name of the band means “know or yes” in Amis, but also means “trouble” in Mandarin.

Sunday night will feature Boxing Band, as well as Sheng-xiang & Band. Boxing band consists of three pairs of Paiwan brothers, and they claim to be the first Latin rap band in Taiwan. 

Sheng-xiang & Band sing in their mother tongue- Taiwanese, and hope to use their music to draw people’s attention to important issues.
