Every weekday between 2 and 8 PM, employees from the store Gr33n Skateshop offer free skateboarding lessons at the old train station behind ShowTime in Taitung.
There are several instructors, but the main teacher is called Ah Lung.
“He has a gentle attitude and teaches me a lot of cool skateboard tricks,” said Yu Fangen, a student who is studying in Taitung.
When the teachers are not offering free skateboard lessons, they spend most of their time at the skateboard store on Heping Street, selling skateboard items and street-style clothes, as well as spreading the latest skateboard news.
“At the beginning, what we wanted to do was to spread street culture to the people of Taitung,” said Ah Kai, the shop owner. “We chose BMX and skateboard as the two elements of street culture we would focus on, so we built a store in the middle of the Taitung City to be a gathering point for people who are interesting in street culture.”
One way in which Gr33n Skateshop spreads skateboard culture is to hold these free classes, and lend skateboards when needed.
