Sunny’s Sunday Brunch Series 1:0981 Café

BY SUNNY LIN DECEMBER 26 , 2018

0981 Café is located in Taitung City close to National Taitung Girl’s Senior High School. It is a popular place that serves not only brunch, but also lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.
“Last Sunday, I had my brunch and dinner there,” said Cynthia, an office lady who works in Taitung City. “It’s a relaxing way to spend a Sunday with those delicious meals.”
0981 Café was named after the first four digits of the shop’s telephone number. The interior decor is industrial.

“The whole generation is moving faster and faster,” said Teresa, one of the staff at the 0981 Café. “We would like people to spend a little time sitting down and relaxing with the soft music and a hearty brunch.”

Teresa has a message she wants to share with customers.
“Slow down your steps,” said Teresa. “Give yourself a few free hours after a busy week.”
The meals there are really diverse. They serve everything from bacon, to snacks, to French fries, as well as many kinds of tea, juice, and coffee. They often have some special activities for afternoon tea.

Fong Yuan Elementary School

BY CHARLES FU DECEMBER 9 , 2018

Fong Yuan Elementary School is often praised as the most beautiful elementary school in Taiwan.
The school was established in 1964. In 2011, due to aging facilities, the ex-principal, Zhang Yue-Zhao, decided to get funding to renovate the buildings in a Mediterranean style of white and blue.

The renovations took a whole year, and since reopening in December 2011, Fong Yuan Elementary School has been a well-known attraction.

"On account of the old and unusable teaching facilities, we applied to the government to give us a subsidy to rebuild the school,” said Zhang. “Our administration decided to take this opportunity to create a relaxed environment which suits the surroundings. As it is next to the ocean, we decided to build a Mediterranean-style building as our new campus.".

“A good campus will improve the education,” said Zhang.

(Before reconstructing)

Fong Yuan Elementary School has begun denying tourists entry since the end of April owing to some travelers’ unacceptable behavior, like throwing trash, interfering with students’ learning, impacting the school’s security, and so on.

“Because our school’s walls are so short that people can climb them easily, everyone is able to go inside as he or she wants,” said Fong Yuan’s administration. “We hope the whole society can respect our decision and be empathetic. If anyone crosses the line, he or she will take the legal responsibility.”

"In my mandate, I would like to help this school be better in many ways, such as student performance and school surroundings,” Said Wu Xiu-Jin, the present principal. “I also want to support teachers to improve their teaching strategies.”

Hou’s Pig’s Blood Soup in Beinan: a 60-year-old Establishment

BY SHAWN TENG DECEMBER 3 , 2018
“Our philosophy of cooking is to provide the most delicious and the freshest food ever, and to let customers have a sense of enjoyment when eating our dishes,” said Mr. Hou, the third-generation owner of Hou’s Pig’s Blood Soup in Beinan.

Hou’s Pig’s Blood Soup is located at the roadside of Gengsheng N. Rd., which is around a 10 to 15 minutes’ drive from downtown Taitung. Their signature cuisine is the “pig’s blood soup”, which is a bowl of soup that has pig’s blood jelly inside it. It goes with pig’s small intestines, spring onions, and ground pepper. According to information from both the Taitung Government and Hou, many tourists plan to eat pig’s blood soup when they visit Taitung.

“It’s been 60 years since my grandmother first cooked and sold pig’s blood soup,” said Hou. “She used to sell pig’s blood soup by using a small mobile food-stall; a few years later, she bought a new place which is the one we’re still using right now. It is literally a historic place.’’

Hou also mentioned some of the difficulties that Pig’s Blood Soup in Beinan has encountered. First and foremost, due to the low incomes of young generation, there are fewer people who are willing to spend their money, whether for food or for other daily necessities. It has had a huge impact on the whole tourism industry. Secondly, people tend to spend their money on chain stores which tend to have lower prices, rather than support local stores, even if the product is more special.

“It’s much harder for us to survive under these circumstances,” said Mrs. Lee, one of the staff at Hou’s.

Hou and his staff hope that they can continue sharing their pig’s blood soup with people who are willing to pay a visit.

“I enjoy eating the pig’s blood soup as well as other dishes in Hou’s Pig’s Blood Soup in Beinan,” said Mr.Zhang, a tourist in the store.
