2018 Taitung Slow Food Festival

BY BRUCE YOUNG NOVEMBER 27 , 2018
The sixth Slow Food Festival was held in Taitung on Nov. 17 and Nov. 18. This time, the theme was seafood. Visitors came from all over Taitung to enjoy different local cuisines.

“The purpose of the Slow Food Festival is to support the part-time farmer in Taitung,” said a spokesman for the organization on Facebook. “We hoped to create a festival that would be a new way to preserve the local food culture.”

Each Festival gathers a lot of unique caterers, farmers, and shop owners from Taitung.

“The organization set up a sink for people to wash their own dishes,” said Mr. Hong, one of the tourists. “It shows they are eco-friendly. And there are many different kinds of local food combined with seafood. It was really delicious.’’

This time, although the theme of the festival was seafood, there were many dishes available that did not include seafood.

“The Slow Food Festival lets us meet people and work together,” said the organization. “Thanks to all the friends who support and care for Taitung Slow Food Festival.”

2018 Taiwan Surfing Open

BY BECK HONG NOVEMBER 26 , 2018

Jinzun Harbor in Taitung will host the Taiwan Surfing Open between Nov. 26 and Dec. 9. There are two competitions. The World Longboard Championships will be from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, and the World Junior Championships will run from Dec. 1 through 9.

“This has proven itself as an incredible location for surfing events over the last seven years,” said Mr. Chang, one of the event organizers.

Taitung is a unique place in terms of waves. The northeast monsoons strongly contribute to the waves in the Donghe and Jinzun area, which has made Taitung one of the most famous spots for surfing in Taiwan.

“We will bring the most intense sport to the sea,” said Chang. “We provide an opportunity for the international players to further understand the beautiful east coast of Taiwan.”

Visitors planning to attend the event need not worry about transportation or accommodation.

“Some tourists even camp in their cars while visiting the competition,” said Antony, an amateur surfer from Taitung. “And I think pickup services are all available in most attractions and stations.”

Taitung has hosted the Taiwan Surfing Open since 2008. It is the 11th anniversary of the event. Surf lovers are welcome to attend.

The organization invited competitors from around the world to compete, and over 700 athletes participated.

This big event also recruited volunteers from all around Taiwan, who were assigned to do different jobs during the competition.

“I was so lucky to see them finish the race,” said Mr. Chen, one of the volunteers. “It's really touching when they reach the finish line.”

The next Challenge Taiwan triathlon will be held on April 27 to 28, 2019.

The First Twilight of New Year - Sansiantai

BY OWEN KU NOVEMBER 9 , 2018

Sanxiantai (Terrace of the three Immortals) is a rock formation off the east coast of Taitung that is a popular stop for tourists heading up the coast.

"If you want to enjoy the sunrise in Taitung, Sanxiantai is the best choice." said Mr. Gu, who lives in Chenggong, Taitung.

Sanxiantai was formed by offshore islets and coral reefs. The island has an odd stone distribution, among them are three huge rocks. The story of these three rocks is from the legend of Lu Dong Bin, Li Tie Jing, and He Xian Gu, which is about three immortals that landed on this island.

Before the eight-arched bridge was built, visitors who wanted to visit Sanxiantai had to wait for the ebb tide and wade across. The island is surrounded by coral reefs.

Also related to the legend of Sanxiantai are other sites on the island, such as Xianjian Gorge and Hehuan Cave. These and other natural wonders on the island, such as ditches, basin caves, and sea walls, were caused by seawater erosion and weathering.

Due to the lack of human disturbance, special coastal plants such as Lintou, Taiwan’s Magnificent Date Palms, White water tree, and Concanavalin can be seen everywhere on this island. They are important bases for the study of coastal plant ecology and are listed as nature reserves.

"Before I went to Sanxiantai, I thought it was only the first place to see the sunrise in Taiwan,” said Charles, a traveler from Taipei. “However, after my trip to Taitung, I found that Sanxiantai was not only a scenic spot, but also a magnificent beach. I enjoyed seeing and feeling the beauty of the place."

The Swing Music Festival culminated last Sunday, Nov. 4, with a jazz concert at Junyi High School. Almost 350 people attended the event.

“Jazz is always honest to the world, and to everybody,” said Mr.Wei, one of the musicians from the jazz band.

The music was well received by the audience.

The Swing Music Festival held concerts all over the eastern part of Taiwan, except Yilan, and the whole series of concerts was free for everyone. The main purpose of the festival was to promote Jazz music to local people.

The festival organization said the most important idea was to let people connect through music and feel the power of jazz.

The festival will be held again in 2018.
