The Old Railroad

The Taitung bicycle path is also named “The old railroad”. The Old Railroad goes through all of Taitung City.

After 1982, the government rebuilt the railroad from Luye to Malan, and added Shanli and Beinan train stations. In 1991, when the new railroad finally started being used, Beinan Station was renamed New Taitung Station, and the old Taitung Station was no longer used. Afterwards, the Taitung government repurposed the old railroad as a recreational pathway.

Pedestrians and cyclists must share the path, but cars and motorcycles are prohibited. The path allows people to travel between downtown and the suburbs in a short time.

“The old railroad allows me to avoid the dangers of car traffic when I travel in Taitung,” said Kenny, a student from Junyi school.

There is shade all over the old railroad, which allows people to rest comfortably out of the heat of the sun. Almost every afternoon Taitung citizens will go there to exercise.

The total length of this path is 21 km. Along the way cyclists will pass the old Taitung Railway Station, Showtime Cinemas, Salmon Hill(鯉魚山), Beinan Waterpark, the Beinan riverbank, Taitung Forest Park, and Taitung Seashore Park.

“I have exercised on this path since I was small,” said Bruce, another student from Junyi. “I have lots of memories on that railroad. It is a really good path.”

Indonesian Migrants

There is a party in Taitung this weekend to celebrate the Indonesian New year. There are many Indonesian migrant workers in Taitung, and this is an opportunity for them to remember their culture and help them feel at home.

The reason why I hold this party every is because I’m trying to make the migrant workers here feel comfortable, and this is also how Muslims celebrate our new year in Indonesia .” Said Xiulian, an Indonesian woman living in Taitung who has been running this event out of her shop for twenty years.

Everybody is welcome to come and celebrate, even if you are not Indonesian.

“You are welcome to join us and have fun with us,” said Andreas, a teacher from Junyi who is helping to organize this celebration.

“Last year, the party was so grand, and all the migrant workers felt so happy,” said Daniel, a student who had joined the party last year. “Through this event people could really know more about Indonesian culture.”

Xiulian’s Indonesian store, where the party is held, is near the Showtime Theater.

“If you are really interested in Indonesian culture, and you want to meet some friendly Indonesian people, then I strongly recommend you come to our big party!” said Kenny, who is also helping to hold the party this year.

B&B (Fu-Taitung)

There is a small bed and breakfast near the Old Taitung Sugar Factory called Fu-Taitung.

"The first time my wife and I traveled around Taiwan, I was attracted by the rice fields and mountain scenery in Taitung ," said Mrs. Wang, the owner of Fu-Taitung. "At that time, we started thinking of living in Taitung. Because I like to travel and enjoy sharing the experiences of traveling, we decided to settle in Taitung and run a B&B, hoping to show the beauty of Taitung to everyone."

They want every visitor to appreciate Taitung. In fact, they are not only selling the room, but also the most suitable trip for customers. They not only provide food maps and scenic maps, but also plan the best travel schedules for customers.

Uncle Pete’s Pizza Shop

Uncle Pete's Pizza is located in Taitung City. People can find the shop easily as it is near the Seashore park. It only takes a few minutes to walk from the park to the shop.

"Wow! This would probably be the best Margherita I have ever had!" said Angelina, an American who is visiting Taiwan for the first time.

The shop is usually full of customers, music and conversation.

“Sometimes Uncle Pete creates a relaxing atmosphere while customers are enjoying the pizzas,” said Mr. Hong, a regular customer who come to this shop every two weeks. “I think he is a talented guy. He can play many kinds of instruments such as banjo, guitar, piano, and violin. There are also some amazing paintings on the wall. ”

   
Pete, the owner of the pizza shop, is an American who has been living in Taiwan for almost 20 years.

"I love Taitung because of the waves, and the people are very kind," said Pete..

The menu at Uncle Pete's is unique. The pizzas have names such as Springfield, San Diego, Covington, and Mozambique, and all the names have meanings.

"Most of the pizzas were named to remember my friends from all over world" said Pete.

   
“My favorite pizza on the menu would probably be the Covington. It is named after one of my best friends in West Virginia,” said Pete. “We used to play around when we were young. It is topped with pepperoni and bacon. It tastes really good!”

The pizzas cost between $100-$300 TWD.
